AACHEN, GERMANY

Aachen is only half an hour up the road so we have been there a few times. Haven't taken many photos though.

Aachen Cathedral - small but astonishingly decorated inside, with floor to ceiling mosaic and marble. As Bill Bryson says in (our purloined copy of) 'Neither Here Nor There', "The cathedral was small and dark but exquisite, with its domed roof, its striped bands of contrasting marble and its stained glass, so rich that it almost seemed liquid. It was one of those buildings that you don't so much look at as bathe in." Quite right, Bill.
"Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe", Bill Bryson, Minerva 1992.

We didn't get any good shots inside the Cathedral so this is an amazing panoramic borrowed from y23.com (© N. Haley 2000). There are more at http://www.fortunecity.de/lindenpark/husserl/424/aachendom/.

Inside the Rathuis or town hall. Needs a bit of a clean outside but is beautiful inside and was once the place where European kings were crowned (with the Pope's permission, of course).

Mo and friend.

Ooh, what a beast!
