SKYDIVE 14/9/01

How to celebrate a 40th birthday? Steve just wanted a nice meal out with Mo, but Mo's best friend Claire was keen that we should mark the occasion with something more momentous. Somehow we ended up agreeing that a skydive was appropriate - and Mo was curiously willing to pay for it. So Steve and his brother, Ian, and Mo and Claire went to Headcorn Parachure Centre for the day. In the end Mo wasn't allowed to do the jump because the wind was too calm to guarantee a controlled landing. But the rest of us ...

Getting kitted up. Claire gets the vibrant turquoise to match her personality, Ian gets the cool black ... and Steve gets to look like a KwikFit fitter!

Paying attention during the briefing. Could these people look any more relaxed about the ordeal they are about to face? Well, yes, they probably could.

Steve and Claire with their "tandem masters", Ken and Clem respectively.

The plane to take us up to an altitude of 12,000 feet (about two and a quarter miles!) - Russian and borrowed for the weekend. Confidence inspiring, huh?

Two and a quarter miles and falling ... aaaaaaggghhh

The ground is getting rapidly closer but that's still an awful long way up.

Coming in to land.

We weren't alone up there.

The relieved survivors.

And reunited with Mo.

I can safely say this was the most exhilarating and most frightening thing I have ever done. I'm glad I did it but, in future, I think I'll stick to SCUBA diving.

If you are interested, there are many more photos than this ... and ... there's even a video!
