TRIER, GERMANY

Claimed as the oldest city in Germany, Trier was founded by the Romans and was an important supply centre by the River Mosel. In later times, and like many cities in the area, Trier passed between the French, Prussians and independence.

The Porta Nigra was a fortified Roman gateway into the old town. Huge sandstone blocks were piled up and joined by iron clamps rather than mortar.

One of a number of cathedrals and churches in the city.

Part of the elaborately carved ceiling.
